about our karate
Japanese martial arts are more straight line fighting styles compared to the circular techniques of their Chinese cousins. Though they are often collectively called karate by those of us in the West, Japanese arts range from empty hand martial systems to joint locking and throwing systems to styles devoted entirely to weapons.
At The Dojo Paramus, we teach Isshin-Ryu Karate. This style was developed by Master Tatsuo Shimabuku (1908-1975) and is passed down to our students as it was taught to Master Melissa by her father, Professor Ronald Allen Mertz.
